Electromagnetism from chapters 21 ¨C 32
Chapters 21 - 27 are
chapters on electricity
Chapters 28 ¨C 31 are chapters on magnetism
The
laws of electricity and magnetism play a central role
in
the operation of devices. Such as ratios, televisions, computersˇ..
As early as 700 B.C. the ancient Greeks found that a piece of
amber,
when rubbed, attracted pieces of feathers.
Experiments by Charles Coulomb in 1785 confirmed
the inverse ¨C square law for the electrostatic force.
The existence of magnetic forces was known from observations that
pieces of a naturally stone called magnetite (Fe₃O₄) were attracted
to iron on the coast of Turkey where magnetite was found.
In 1873, James Clerk Maxwell formulated the laws of
electromagnetism
¨C MaxwellˇŻs equations on chapter 32.
